6 pages., Via online journal., Electric lamps are widely used to supplement sunlight (supplemental lighting) and daylength extension (photoperiodic lighting) for the production of horticultural crops in greenhouses and controlled environments. Recent advances in light-emitting diode (LED) technology now provide the horticultural industry with multiple lighting options. However, growers are unable to compare technologies and LED options because of insufficient data on lamp performance metrics. Here, we propose a standardized product label that facilitates the comparison of lamps across manufacturers. This label includes the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) efficacy, PAR conversion efficiency, photon flux density output in key wave bands, as well as the phytochrome photostationary state (PSS), red/far red ratio, and graphs of the normalized photon flux density across the 300–900 nm wave band and a horizontal distribution of the light output.

James F. Evans Collection, This study provides a quantitative content analysis of the depictions of sex roles in the American news magazine Time and the West German news magazine Stern from 1969 to 1988. The underlying assumption of the study is that advertisements reflect changes in social reality. While most studies focus on explicit aspects of gender role depictions such as jobs, activities, interactions and situations, this content analysis also covers implicit aspects of role depictions such as posture, gestures, and facial expression. Some authors have claimed that these are powerful means of transmitting traditional sex role stereotypes of women as being submissive and of men being dominant. Results indicate that while there have been considerable changes in the explicit presentation of male and female roles, the implicit presentation remained quite consistent over the 20-year period. According to these findings, sex roles may have changed primarily on the surface, while nonverbal sex role stereotypes still linger on. Differences between the developments in Germany and the US are outlined. (original)
18 pages., via online journal, As food products marketed as “gluten-free” become increasingly popular, many consumers start to exclude sources of gluten (e.g., wheat, barley, and rye) from their diets for both medical and non-medical purposes. The grain industry is facing a growing challenge to (re)boost consumers’ confidence in the healthiness and safety of its commodities. Using 561 participants recruited from the Amazon Mechanical Turk workers’ panel, this study implemented a 2 (pretzels vs. potato chips) * 2 (positive- vs. negative- frame) * 2 (wheat image vs. no wheat image) experiment to examine the effects of gluten-free labels on consumers’ perceived healthiness and safety of wheat, perceived benefits of labeled products, and their evaluation of the shown labels. Results showed that consumers evaluate the gluten-free labels most positively when they appear on products that could have contained gluten. For products that are naturally gluten-free, adding a gluten-free label only decreased consumers’ confidence in such labels. The presence of gluten-free labels increased consumers’ perceived benefits of the labeled products when they do not contain any misleading information (e.g., image of a wheat head). However, some gluten-free labels could have negative impacts on consumers’ perceptions of the healthiness and safety of wheat. Overall, food producers and marketers might have undervalued consumers’ literacy and overestimated their susceptibility to marketing strategies. We discussed the implications for food marketers, regulators, and communicators.
2 pages., Online via Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Author suggests that universities and research centres "persist with 19th century methods of data gathering, scholarly analysis, and journal articles. Today's world needs science in real-time, whether to detect drought, confront Ebola, or assist refugees. Research needs to work faster and embrace 21st century practices including data science, open access, and infographics."
