CIN TV, the only Caribbean TV network in the US, in association with Harlem Week 2004, is proud to announce the launching of the annual CIN Caribbean Lecture Series. The event takes place this year on Sunday, September 19 at the Schomburg Center, 515 Malcolm X Blvd., New York starting at 3 p.m. sharp. Hill's lecture will focus attention on the strategic role that Harlem and New York played in the making of the modern Caribbean, culturally, politically, and economically and the importance that Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) occupies in the history of this relationship. Garvey and the UNIA are a window through which to view the whole New York-Caribbean axis. Hill will also explore some intriguing aspects of this story that have been overlooked in asking - Why Garvey? Why Harlem? Why New York?
The annual event is a celebration of the second principle of Nguzo Saba, 'Kujichagulia' which means 'self determination'. Providing musical entertainment for the night was the Anthem Band along with saxophonist, Jerry Johnson and roots reggae singers Ossie Dellimore, Major Daps and Noel Jones. Artist [Guy S. Fleury] began to to paint at the age of 12. After emigrating to the United States in 1970, he painted consistently until 1974. Fleury studied Haitian art and history with notable Haitian artist Wilfrid Austin, known as "Frido." He also studied the fine art and is strained in art restoration and expert framing. Each of Fleury's paintings has a unique touch and it is very difficult to recognize his paintings unless you are very familiar with the painter himself. Fleury remains true to his images of Haitian subjects but not in a typical or traditional way. Fleury paints scenery of his native town of St. Marc depicting personage, way of life - the coumbite, historical events, spiritualism, traditional values, etc.
Not rooted or identified as a Brazilian martial art, Capoiera Angola is the foundation of which African-Brazilians adapted the rhythmic form of self-defense and offense called Capoiera. The indigineous Capoiera Angola is the mother/father of Brazil's Capoeira, which was formed when Africans from Central Africa were brought to South America in bondage. Capoeira Angola goes further.
Gazing at the amalgam of rich Caribbean artistic expression - bold colors intertwining on canvas, delicately woven wire sculptures, sheer pieces of cloth with intricate handmade designs - one might think she was roaming the corridors of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the prestigious Guggenheim rather than viewing the one-bedroom Harlem apartment of Caribbean art dealer Anderson Pilgrim. "One of the reasons that Caribbean art has yet to penetrate the New York scene is that it has yet to be fully explored even among Caribbeans", Pilgrim said. "Because of the colonization of the Caribbean islands, and the stifling post-colonial effects, many native Caribbeans didn't begin to explore their abilities until the 1970s, which was a period of real artistic revolution on the islands". A few of the artists he represented were medal winners at the prestigious Biennial Caribbean Festival, held in the Dominican Republic and featuring artists from the Caribbean and Countries in Central America which border the Caribbean.
In addressing some of the issue facing Caribbean migrants, Dr. Manley implored everyone to take responsibilities for themselves and their respective islands. "Maybe we have been depending too much on the people we elect. A democracy works best when it has citizens who are willing to be accountable," she said. While empathizing with the terrorism issues, currently affecting the United States, Dr. Manley pointed out that the Caribbean was also experiencing terrorism in its own form. "For us poverty is terrorism. The amount of guns that come into Jamaica from this country is terrorism. Jamaica is way ahead of the other islands with their homicide rate. "Guyana is right behind us and some other islands are beginning to see the same thing happening."

The NDP administration has been in charge in that tiny Caribbean island ever since it defeated the now defunct St. Vincent Labor Party (SVLP) in the 1984 general election. The album is now No. 3 on Billboard Magazine's album chart, but nowhere on the Grammy list of five selections. Favored to place, show or win, The Baha Men of the Banamas were a sure bet. Their baseball-friendly "Who Let the Dogs Out" is awaiting verdict in the dance recording category.
Then the charismatic Sundar Popo, who championed "chutney" music, or Indian soca, died of heart failure in May at the age of 57. Sundar Popo is remembered for "Your Mother's Love" and other hits. "People here are very superstitious," said businessman Danny Montano. They conclude "something has swept the country, something is wrong, and that's why so many bad things are happening."
New York elected officials and foreign dignitaries from the Caribbean and Africa among them were state Sen. Johns Sampson, Assemblymen Clarence Norman Jr. and Nick Perry, Councilwoman Una Clarke, Comptroller Alan Hevesi, Councilman Ken Fisher as well as Jamaican Consul General Dr. Basil Bryan and former Trinidad and Tobago Consul General Babooram Rambissoon. CACCI's founder and president, Roy A. Hastick Sr., said those honored as year 2001 visionaries were "recognized for their willingness to take the risk and accept the challenge to start and operate a small business in today's economy."
