"For the past six years, Jean-Marie Simon has been photographing people and reporting events from this hauntingly beautiful and remote land. Her text and pictures tell the story of a people imprisoned, particularly the Mayan Indians, whose lives have been so torn apart by political strife. This is a beautiful book; yet at the same time it is incredibly disturbing in its portrayal of a civilization violated by the army, police, and paramilitary government forces."
"First work of a young Haitian born author, How to Make Love to a Negro without getting tired is still valid seventeen years after its release. Meanwhile, the novel became a classic of Quebec literature and Dany Laferriere has been recognized as a major writer of French literature. Greeted by unanimous criticism and enthusiastic audiences, How to Make Love to a Negro Without Getting Tired was a resounding success in several countries, particularly in the Anglophone world in which we compared its author to Bukowski and Miller."

AGRICOLA IND 91016420, Farm producers attempt to mitigate risk and uncertainty by utilizing accurate and reliable information. This research attempts to identify sources of information used by Ohio fruit producers and then determine which of these sources are best meeting their information needs. Results are based on a logic analysis of Ohio fruit producers and several factors are shown to influence producers' evaluation of the "adequacy" of their marketing information. Among these factors are age, business size, education, type of enterprise, and types of information sources. Reported findings have implications for marketing efficiency, particularly if producers' evaluation of information as adequate is positively related to its efficient use.

(ILENR/RE-PA-90/01), Due to the high costs of conventional production agriculture, as well as concerns about adverse effects of production agriculture, there is a heightened interest in alternative or sustainable agriculture. These concerns have led to an increased interest in sustainable agriculture as a means of addressing the environmental and the economic concerns associated with production agriculture. This paper examines Illinois farmers' opinions and attitudes about their current farming practices, future practices, sources of information and attitudes about pesticides, health, economics, and groundwater and surface water quality. The study assesses present farming practices and farmers' desires to change those practices and it ascertains the extent to which Illinois farmers practice or may be willing to practice sustainable agriculture. Evidence from a statewide survey indicates that farmers are fairly traditional in their approach to agriculture and that few farmers practice sustainable techniques. Although the majority of farmers surveyed are not interested in change, a significant minority are interested. The group of farmers that is interested in change, for the most part, presently using sustainable agricultural practices. Results show that there is a definite need for more information and research in sustainable agriculture. Policy recommendations were made to promote the development of a policy initiative from which legislators and others interested in sustainable agriculture could derive ideas and develop legislative initiatives that will encourage and promote sustainable agriculture.

AGRICOLA CAT 90939434; Contains Abstract and Table of Contents only, Blacksburg, VA : Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1990. vii, 113 leaves : ill., forms (Ph. D. dissertation; Educational Research and Evaluation), This study investigated a systematic process for improving the understanding or comprehensibility of the educational publications produced by the Cooperative Extension Service. A model of a publication development process based on learning principles was created. This study investigated the effectiveness of the model with Extension subject-matter specialists developing publications for 4-H youth. Specifically, this study was conducted in three parts: the model of the text-development process was taught to subject-matter specialists; the specialists in turn used the model to develop educational texts for 4-H youth; and finally comprehensibility testing of the text passages produced by the specialists with 4-H youth members and adult leaders was conducted. This study confirmed that the utilization of learning principles within the text-development process can improve the comprehensibility of subject matter information presented in Extension educational publications. Kerry J. Byrnes Collection, United States Agency for International Development. A.I.D. evaluation special study, no. 67. 43 pages., A.I.D.'s experience with farming systems research and extension (FSR/E) has been mixed. FSR/E projects have provided opportunities for developing country professionals to acquire training and field experience in this new approach to research. However, most projects have bot had the impact on technology development and transfer or institutionalization of FSR/E as had been assumed in project designs. This report, based on a case study review of evaluations of 12 A.I.D.-funded projects, synthesizes the Agency's experience with FSR/E from the mid-1970's to the mid-1980's and assesses the impact of these projects on agricultural development.
