Argues that the task for the researcher is attempting to understand how race and class differently interact in particular contexts. Concludes that a focus on Black Caribbean heritage families can further develop the concept of concerted cultivation, and demonstrate the complex ways in which, for these families, such a strategy is a tool of social reproduction but also functions as attempted protection against racism in White mainstream society.

On Saturday, May 18, 2013, all children are invited for a special free day at A Taste of the Caribbean. Cultural workshops informing and educating children about our rich heritage will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The day will be filled with entertainment from the Caribbean and Africa. Interactive workshops will feature the African drum experience, steel pan lessons, kite making, costume making, hair braiding, storytelling, African dance lessons and much more. Food and drinks on sale. Caribbean and African arts and crafts will be on display in the many kiosks and a playground filled with interactive games will entice the kids. In short, culture and entertainment the entire day! Motivational speakers will be on hand to encourage the young minds.
In fact, whenever I am accused of "playing the Race Card ", I always let folk know that I didn't deal die hand. It has been my experience that if you ask "why?" long enough eventually it will come down to race. And if it is between or amongst people of the same color, Class becomes the issue. But we can argue about that in another post at another time. With instances such as these it's tough to holler "race" because Black folk make it easy for White folk to say, "Forget it". I have heard Black folk say, "Who do they think they are? How are White folks going to raise Black children? They have no idea what it's like to be Black"! And maybe they don't . . . but they don't know what it's like to be Asian, Indian, Haitian or African either. Now I am sure there will be those who will read this and say, "My family adopts ... in fact, they adopted me!" and they will go down a list that reads like that fifth chapter of Genesis in the Bible inserting "adopt" for every "begat". And while that is good for that particular family, that family and those like it are the exception and not the rule.
The murder of the three children Dwayne Davidson, 15, Sue-Ann Gordon, 13, both students of St. Mary High School, and Shadece Williams, 4, has torn at Jamaica's 'heart strings'. "I am not really related but hearing about the deaths. It was so horrible I had to come," said Amy Bailey from Portland who broke down in tears when she was unable to "even get a glimpse of the casket," due to the massive crowd at both church services. Bishop Dunn challenged the crowd, stating, "Don't let those children die in vain."
Draws on qualitative data exploring the experiences of first-generation middle-class Black Caribbean-heritage parents, their own parents, and their children. Focuses on the different ways in which race and class intersect in shaping attitudes towards education and subsequent educational practices.
One basic but tremendously important strategy is becoming and staying involved in our daughters' education. Our girls need to be told and reminded that all professions are open to them and that they must begin from an early age to prepare for these professions. Historically, girls do not take as many math and science courses as boys do, yet many top-paying professions require these subjects. Let your daughters know that math, chemistry, physics, etc., are not boy' exclusive domain but that girls have the aptitude to do just as well in these areas. These are women whose lives speak eloquently of courage, determination and achievement. Contemporary women also provide striking examples of qualities our own daughters can emulate. Within our churches, schools and communities are countless women with stories worth sharing.
