Conference paper, Society for the Study of Social Problems. 2 pages., "The lines between art photography, documentary, and photojournalism have increasingly blurred since the early 1980s." Author cites Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother" image [disseminated through the Farm Security Administration] as an emblematic piece of concerned photography "now ubiquitous in realms quite removed from social concern for poverty."

Apart from describing the shortage of mobile phones, the report indicates that growth in mobile phone usage is concentrated in urban areas and is "creating a widening communication gap between rural and urban communities."

INTERPAKS, Urbana, IL: Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Illinois, 1979. (Staff paper, series S, rural sociology no. 79 S-12). 29 p., Examines the long-run effects on the diffusion of agricultural innovations, especially a key question in adoption and development research: Does a higher level of adoption of improved technology contribute to greater or lesser equality in distribution of social and economic "rewards" over time? Examination of this question is based on data drawn from interviews with 228 farm operators in Maharashtra, India. The first interview took place in 1967 and the follow-up interview in 1973. Analysis is focused on changes in equality of reward distribution among them over the six years. Results of the data indicate increased inequality in volume of production over the six years, not necessarily attributable to differences in utilization of agricultural technology. Inequalities in material well-being have decreased. Concludes that for this sample, and in the absence of radically improved production technology, the impact of induced change in production inputs and practices is such as to decrease the inequality in rewards over time. Analysis also covers access to information through extension contact and the mass media.

James F. Evans Collection, Explores the long-term implications of the diffusion of agricultural innovations. Data from a sample of 228 Indian farmers were collected in order to determine the effects of differential acceptance of improved agricultural technology on changes in equality of reward distribution over time. Shows that inequality increases over time with respect to gross agricultural production. But lagging behind in adoption of agricultural technology has to be answered in the negative. Notes that inequalities in both level and standard of living are reduced over time. Early failure to adopt agricultural technology does not seem to lead to disadvantage. Discusses the results in terms of the assumptions made about categories of adopters in diffusion research, and in terms of equity assumptions with regard to technological change. (original)
