James F. Evans Collection; Paper presented at the 1989 Annual Conference of Agricultural Communicators in Education; 1989 July; Portland, OR, Responses from a mail survey of 190 journalists who work for farm journals -- a 78 response rate -- reveal that about two thirds of the journalists say advertisers have threatened their journals on occasion, and about one-half say that advertising has actually been withdrawn. The journalists also report that advertisers sometimes attempt to win over journalists with gifts, free meals, or in other ways, usually not with success. These journalists report that most farm publications do not have a clear policy in dealing with advertiser influence. At the same time, most farm journals are struggling to maintain advertising, a struggle that makes them vulnerable to pressures.

James F. Evans Collection, Development reporting in 14 rural Georgia weekly newspapers is examined, and the extent and manner of development news in these newspapers are compared with results from previously published studies of development news in other countries. The data indicate that the rural Georgia newspapers tend to devote less space to development news, to emphasize physical facilities development more and to quote or portray government sources less. These results are interpreted as indicating a need for more attention to development communication in local media in rural areas of the United States. (original)

James F. Evans Collection, Ham, Mimeographed, 1994. 1 p. Presented at the Society for Nutrition Education, Portland, OR, July 16-20, 1994., Newspapers, magazines, television and radio are often the only exposure the public has to information on environmental risk. However, a recent study of network news coverage demonstrated a disparity between the media and scientists on leading environmental risk issues (Lichter, Rothman & Mills, 1993). The medial overemphasized certain factors that scientists rated as only minor. To determine the nature of food safety news coverage in Nevada, a descriptive study was conducted of news and opinion/editorial articles appearing in the 36 Nevada newspapers during a two-year period (July '91 to July '93). All articles related to food safety were collected and categorized according to type, topic and source (n=312). Findings showed that of the 256 news articles appearing during that time, a significant proportion (71%) were from wire services. The five topics appearing most often were foodborne illness (37%), public policy (18%), food tampering (12%), food contaminants (10%), and safe food handling (10%). Opinion/editorial pieces (n=56) were varied and included syndicated columns, editorials, letters to the editor and cartoons. Findings from this study may be useful in working with the media to improve consumers' understanding of food safety and quality issues.

James F. Evans Collection, The purpose of this study was to learn about print news units within agricultural communications departments across the land-grant university system, specifically: (1) How much is invested into print news, (2) The type and nature of projects produced, (3) How audiences are defined, and (4) Answers to questions relating to production, distribution, marketing, and demographics. A questionnaire was mailed to all 52 land-grant university agricultural communications departments (50 states plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands)> The return rate was 80.8 percent. Among the findings: reporters overwhelmingly had a journalism/mass communications employment background; almost half of the news release output was of a "feature story" variety. Print news components (called PNCs by the authors) placed the most emphasis on "production agriculture" (producing most releases about this subject) and "nutrition or personal health". Marketing was primarily a function of geography, rather than audience demographics. (original)
search through journal, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension provides educational programming through various methods of delivery. As part of the Family Community Education (FCE) Program, Extension specialists provide leader training lessons to Extension educators and assistants. Survey data were collected from Extension educators and assistants involved in the FCE Program to find out their needs involving the delivery of leader training lessons. The data revealed that satellite broadcast is a viable source to deliver leader training lessons and other programming material to Extension educators and assistants throughout Nebraska. Sixty-three percent of the respondents preferred satellite delivery, as opposed to 35 percent who liked in-person training at district meetings.
