INTERPAKS, Examines the conditions under which cultivators in 84 agrarian villages within the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh adopted green revolution technology. Social status or resources and awareness are viewed as necessary but not sufficient conditions for the trial of innovation. A multiplicative model was specified to examine their effects. At higher levels of education, awareness was translated into trial at a high rate. In villages where awareness and resources were relatively highly concentrated, the rate of translation of awareness into trial was higher.

James F. Evans Collection, This is a comparative analysis of the adjustment of a Danish and a Polish ethnic group to the American culture in a dairy farming area in central Wisconsin. The adjustment is evaluated in terms of recommended farm practices. These practices are grouped under three major categories: (1) livestock practices, (2) cropping practices, and (3) mechanization. For every trait measured the Danish farm group exceeds the Polish group in the proportion who have adopted the selected recommended practices. The performance suggests that the Danish and Polish ethnic groups are different universes from the standpoint of behavior and reaction to recommended dairy farming practices. The Danish and the Polish groups constitute distinct culture complexes, or subcultures, within the North central dairy region. the evidence of the study indicated that the cultural adjustments of the Danish group facilitate the introduction of new ides, whereas the adjustments of the Polish group tend to perpetuate status quo. Evans, cited reference, This study is concerned with inter-community differences in social organization as these may affect the success of agricultural change programs in a sample of 108 Indian villages. With knowledge of the sociology of the community in its present state, it is not surprising that a number of the operational hypotheses posed were not supported by the data. Among these were hypotheses concerning agrarian structure, occupational structure, and the expected negative role of factional and religious cleavages. Local availability of farm labor and capital, plus a proliferation of formal organizations favor change program success. Traditional and modern elements of community organization seem to be intertwined in the modernization of agriculture, indicating a need for more systematic sociological knowledge of the community. Phase II, Raises several questions about prevailing conception of adopters and adoption behavior. Specifically, the author argues that research has failed to take into account variations in farming environments, natural physical parameters, and the social organization of resources as factors influencing peasant farmers' adoption behavior. More attention ought to be given to the location specific constraints, characteristics and requirements of specific technologies, and to the general issue of whether identical technologies are equivalent innovations in different agro-climatic environments. Drawing on data from several villages in Nepal, the author shows that rates of adoption are location specific, that is, influenced more by agro-climatic conditions and socioeconomic organization than by inter-village differences in propensity to innovate. Ecological suitably and varying levels of farm resources have a direct effect on technology utilization.

James F. Evans Collection, Explores the long-term implications of the diffusion of agricultural innovations. Data from a sample of 228 Indian farmers were collected in order to determine the effects of differential acceptance of improved agricultural technology on changes in equality of reward distribution over time. Shows that inequality increases over time with respect to gross agricultural production. But lagging behind in adoption of agricultural technology has to be answered in the negative. Notes that inequalities in both level and standard of living are reduced over time. Early failure to adopt agricultural technology does not seem to lead to disadvantage. Discusses the results in terms of the assumptions made about categories of adopters in diffusion research, and in terms of equity assumptions with regard to technological change. (original)
