James F. Evans Collection, This study was designed to examine an automated call-in radio news service versus an operator answered system. It examined how the tapes were being used and attempted to determine the effectiveness of promotional items for the service. It was clear the numbers of callers using the automated service increased significantly (nearly three times) over an operator-answered system. The study suggested that a toll-free telephone number was not a significant factor in whether the service was used and also found that the order in which the stories were available was not important. The results also suggest that for call-in kinds of news services to work, regular promotions to remind the users of the system must be done. (original)
It is an acknowledged fact that agro chemicals specially fertilizer was the fuel that sparked off the ignition of green revolution. Attempts are being made constantly by all those connected directly -- manufacturers, marketeers, distributors, dealers and indirectly -- Department of Agriculture, Cooperatives, Extension Agencies to reach the message to the farming community most effectively. In this process, various media are used as tools. Despite three decades of continuous work, the impact of the result is not commensurate with the efforts. An attempt is made in this paper to analyze each activity critically and scope for improvement. This has been the outcome after a study in 190 villages of southern Karnataka covering about 5,000 farmers by the writer. No importance has been attached to statistics, obviously to make it relatively simpler and more readable. (original)
James F. Evans Collection, This paper proposes that rural people can use a participatory rural newspaper as a rallying point for formal and informal discussions with development agents to improve their own life situation. The future of communication for development in the Third World lies in the shift from the use of big to small media like participatory rural newspaper. The micro model of communication for development presented here may be applied to other localized media instead of the participatory rural newspaper. But the adaption would require adjustments both in the theoretical as well as procedural approach to suit the particular mini medium. (original)

James F. Evans Collection, Mimeographed, 1991. 10 p. Paper presented at the USDA/University of Missouri videoconference "Poised for the Press" on September 5, 1991., Print media seem to have a clear edge over television and radio in communicating complex information which requires detailed explanations. Most effective choice of media depends on what needs to be communicated.

James F. Evans Collection, Mimeographed, 1994. 25 p. Paper presented at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Convention in Atlanta, GA, August 10-13, 1994., This study examines the ways in which staff of communication units in agricultural extension agencies in Malaysian select media to transfer knowledge to their clients. The findings revealed that the respondents regard actual objects are best in knowledge transfer activities, followed by media that convey reality with a high degree of fidelity. With regard to the selection elements considered important, they choose audience characteristic, followed in order by purpose of communication, audience media preference and time given to complete the media. Theodore Hutchcroft Collection, This study looks into the concept of democracy as it is understood within the African context and the role which the mass media could play in promoting and sustaining it. It argues that, given Africa's colonial experience and its history of struggle for human dignity and liberation, the appropriate role for the mass media must be to sustain this struggle. Accordingly, their relevance must be seen in relation to the extent to which they promote the developmental and democratic aspirations of the majority of the people. And, as such, training of African media practitioners must be predicated on the necessity to give them clear orientation for the achievement of these goals. Finally, the professional status of journalists and of the journalism profession must be acknowledged by political authorities and policy makers; journalists must be appropriately renumerated and their profession upgraded within the hierarchy of national priorities.
