We seem to continue through repeated cycles in which issues remain the same and problems rarely are fully resolved. The roots of these challenges lie deep in our national history."

Reprinted editorial from Farm, Stock and Home. Recounts the dangers of withholding advertising because a marketer does not happen to like a certain article or editorial in a paper. "If this attitude of mind becomes general and advertising is distributed to the trimmers or the silent publications the public will be under the necessity of paying something like a reasonable price for publications that dare to be alive and vital. Perhaps that would be more satisfactory all around, for if an editor must write with both eyes on the advertisers, it's a long farewell to social, economic and moral progress."

Via UI Library subscription., Study aimed to provide tools to improve the quality of journalism regarding ethical issues that concern our relationship with nonhuman animals. Explored the role of news media (two years of coverage by the New York Times newspaper, U.S., and El Pais, Spain) in constructing perceptions of nonhumans used for food and their treatment. Results showed that both newspapers played a major role in concealing the nonhumans' cruel treatment, but a distinction can be drawn between the crude speciesism of El Pais and the camouflaged, more deceptive style of the New York Times.

And what are the links between one and the other? This article focuses on a 2016 expose reported on Swedish public television about alleged corruption in aid to Zambia, reflecting failure of both donor and recipient. Authors focus on the news media as mediator of the donor's communication with its tax-paying audiences and demonstrated potentials of an integrated conceptual approach to communication for and about development. Findings reveal greater media coverage of financial accountability than on doing good for Zambian citizens.

"emerging data suggest that, in some circumstances, the media reporting of science is surprisingly accurate and portrays a message created by the scientific community. As such, there are reasons to believe that the hyping of research might be part of a more systemic problem associated with the increasingly commercial nature of the research environment."
