Paper presented to Research Special Interest Group, Association for Communication Excellence, for presentation at its international meeting, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, June 20-24. Paul Yarbrough, emeritus professor, Cornell University, contributed to the design of the study., 16 p., A total of 226 Iowa farm households with computers were surveyed in 2001 about their use of the Internet for both farm and non-farm uses. Of the 111 farmers (49%) that responded, 87 (78%) used the Internet. Results showed heavy Internet use by multiple household members (farmer, spouse and children), especially for information-seeking and email activities. Use of the Internet for transactions was limited. Farmers were more likely to seek farm decision information, whereas children were more likely to play games and use the Internet for school activities. Spouses used the Internet mostly for email. Farmers now regard the Internet as an essential tool for gathering information they couldn't find elsewhere. Implications for communicators are that the Internet should now be part of the information plan for all communicators serving rural farm audiences, both for farm and non-farm information. Extension and other trusted sources should spend more time guiding clients to trustworthy sites for information.

10 pages, Low agricultural productivity remains one of the main factors influencing poverty and food insecurity among smallholder farmers in many developing countries. Among the key interventions assumed to influence agricultural productivity of smallholders is the provision of agricultural extension services to farmers. Access to agricultural extension however remains low in most developing countries thus slowing down agricultural productivity growth. This study therefore sought to determine the labor productivity effects of agricultural extension in northern Ghana using data from a cross-section of 300 smallholder farm households. The results of a binary probit model indicated that participation in agricultural extension increased with farming experience, farm size, access to irrigation and group membership but decreased with years of formal education and household size. Regression estimates of a labor productivity model revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between agricultural extension and labor productivity. Also, labor productivity increased with farming experience, household income, access to irrigation, degree of specialization in production and the level of conventional inputs used per man-day of labor but decreased with participation in off-farm work. The authors recommend an increase in agricultural extension coverage to ensure that more farmers are reached with information on modern technologies to enhance their labor productivity. Furthermore, farmers need access to inputs such as seed and fertilizer to improve the productivity of labor.

Axinn, Evans, Sixty-nine farm families in Shardanagar Panchayat, Chitwan District, Nepal, provided data via a questionnaire for analysis of the information flow to these farm families. The major channel for information flow in this area was word-of-mouth, with information coming from relatives, various officials, and commercial people. One-third of the farms had radio receivers, and a slightly higher proportion reported that they received newspapers. Two -thirds reported that they received letters from others. Over 75% of the families had a boy or man present who could read, and 17% of the families had a girl present who could read. Organization membership, participation, and other interpersonal inter-actions were also analyzed. (author)

AGRICOLA IND 89025670, A survey of farm families in five states was conducted to determine current attitudes and practices regarding the removal of pesticides from contaminated clothing. There was little evidence that respondents to this survey have been obtaining available information regarding the care of pesticide contaminated clothing. Even when the launderers did receive such information, many did not adopt the recommended procedures with the exception of storing and washing pesticide contaminated clothing separately and using hot or warm water for washing. Families in which the launderer was under 30 in age were least likely to obtain and use recommended care procedures. The relatively low rate of information requisition and use, especially among younger respondents, suggests a need for better information delivery systems as well as more compelling appeals regarding the importance of using the information once it has been received.
