INTERPAKS, In: Training for agriculture and rural development, 1980. p. 23-37, Explains the differing French and British backgrounds to extension activities in African countries. Considers training problems for extension agents which are common to many countries in Africa. Three broad conclusions are reached: (1) extension is one aspect of a global agricultural policy, participation of farmers can be strengthened by extension work only so long as the overall policy serves the interests of farmers; (2) coordination of field activities must take place at district levels; and (3) regional seminars are needed for similar ecological regions and bilingual seminars would help in coordinating activity of French and English speaking countries.

INTERPAKS, Mimeographed, 1984. Washington, D.C.: Agricultural Sector, Eastern and Western African Projects, World Bank. 28 p., Summarizes the papers presented at the African Workshop on Extension and Research. Topics discussed include the role of agricultural extension in sub-Saharan Africa, issues concerning current methodologies, and approaches to extension and research-extension linkages. The final section presents an overview of individual country experiences with extension. The countries represented were Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, Malawi, Somalia, and Zimbabwe.
INTERPAKS, Reviews how the agricultural extension agent has dealt with the process of technology transfer and the categories of farmers affected by the diffusion process. Discusses CIMMYT's model of grouping rural populations into homogenous target categories to develop appropriate technologies and the influence it has had on the process of technology development. Points out that strategies intended to assist small farmers depend as much on the creation of appropriate opportunities as on the creation of appropriate technologies.

James F. Evans Collection, Agricultural communicators are accustomed to acting as change agents. Now communicators face the challenge of dealing with technological changes that are reshaping their own profession. A case history is presented of electronic delivery of Extension information at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). This paper examines the role of the technical communicator within an evolving framework of institutional change. It is seen that tasks traditionally performed by editors and artists are in one sense unchanged, although they are now performed by computers. However, there are new opportunities for communicators, especially in the areas of user interface design and knowledge management, that are made possible by the new computer medium.
James F. Evans Collection, Results from this study of Extension clientele in North Carolina depict the need for Extension professionals to provide educational opportunities through multiple program delivery methods. Clientele's choice of methods was based on receiving information that was both subject and audience specific, yet the information could be received in an understandable and personally comfortable manner. Data were collected by Extension agents using a structured personal interview. Study respondents were mature adults; a majority had nonfarm professions as primary occupations, had completed some post secondary training, had at least some dependence on Extension for information, and received Extension information for more than five years. Respondents indicated personal visits, meetings, newsletters, demonstrations, and workshops as most preferred delivery methods. Other major findings include: method demonstrations were preferred by younger, more educated clientele; clientele with less dependence on Extension and fewer years of contact preferred the videocassette; farmers preferred personal visits and meetings more than did individuals with other occupations; and clientele with the longest interaction with Extension and those perceiving Extension professional as educators were more likely to identify computer software and computer networks as important delivery methods.

search through journal, Many farmers view with skepticism the dominant agricultural research and extension education model, in which knowledge on farming practices is developed by researchers and delivered through extension programs. The participatory research and education model is designed to support a shared vision of research and education as a learning process among partners working in community. The participatory model is offered as a way to achieve better communication and enhanced cooperation among farmers, researchers and extension educators. (original)

search through journal, Research and extension personnel are beginning to look for new strategies to involve more farmers and the non-farm public in their programs. Two approaches we have used are whole farm case studies (WFCS) and focus groups. WFCS in Oregon and Washington led to several research and educational programming ideas that are currently being pursued in both states. A focus group to study water quality, nitrate leaching and farming practices in Skagit County, Washington is one outcome of the WFCS process. It is made up of 16 people, including farmers, university personnel, members of environmental groups, and government representatives. We review these two complementary participatory strategies for systems-oriented sustainable agriculture research and education programs. Both have been very useful for building problem-solving partnerships between the land-grant universities and agricultural and environmental constituents in our area. Noteworthy outcomes include: complementary applied on-farm and experiment station research; farming systems analysis; public education; new linkages with environmental and agricultural interest groups; additional grant funds to address identifies priority issues; and interdisciplinary teams that cut across the biological and social sciences and include diverse citizen representation. James F. Evans Collection, Mimeographed, 1994. 25 p. Paper presented at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Convention in Atlanta, GA, August 10-13, 1994., This study examines the ways in which staff of communication units in agricultural extension agencies in Malaysian select media to transfer knowledge to their clients. The findings revealed that the respondents regard actual objects are best in knowledge transfer activities, followed by media that convey reality with a high degree of fidelity. With regard to the selection elements considered important, they choose audience characteristic, followed in order by purpose of communication, audience media preference and time given to complete the media.
