Via online issue. 3 pages., Report on Wendell Berry's remarks for the 2012 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Speaker suggests appreciating the word "economy" for its original meaning of "household management. ... I mean, not economics, but economy, the making of the human household upon the earth; the arts of adapting kindly the many human households to the earth's many ecosystems and human neighborhoods. This is the economy that the most public and influential economists never talk about, the economy that is the primary vocation and responsibility of every one of us."
UI electronic subscription, Author analyzes the history, methods and impact of a radio program, "We say what we think," produced by a group of Dane County rural women during this period. Offers perspectives on how the Extension Service encouraged domesticity as the role of rural women. "Linking domesticity to the trope of progress in this way kept rural women from discussing the changes taking place around them." Author also comments on marginalization of rural sociology as a discipline in the academy.

58 pages., Journal article via online., Historical analysis of print advertising in the early 20th Century revealed that "in an era of scientific discovery and therapeutic ethos, fruits and vegetables were advertised as medical tonics, with 'prescriptions' that included recommended daily doses, to ward off or cure real or imagined medical ailments (flu, listlessness, acidosis)." Findings identified social positives and negatives associated with this practice. Researchers recommended use of a broader social marketing and transdisciplinary approach.

INTERPAKS, Mimeographed, 1981. Paper prepared for the Development Studies Association Annual Conference, September 10-12, 1981. 9 p., Briefly examines the relation between agricultural extension innovation and social change. Discusses the importance of extension organizations listening to their clients more carefully. Notes the difficulty and complexity of identifying induced change or 'development'. Illustrates the effect social change may have on extension-related development work. Cases include sale of cocoa by New Guinea growers involving kinship systems and changing concept of inheritance and the effect of access to new irrigation systems on social change in two south Indian villages.
17 pages, via online journal, The greatest challenge now facing agricultural science is not how to increase production overall but how to enable resource-poor farmers to produce more.
The transfer-of-technology (TOT) model of agricultural research is part of the normal professionalism of agricultural scientists. In this model, scientists largely determine research priorities, develop technologies in controlled conditions, and then hand them over to agricultural extension to transfer to farmers. Although strong structures and incentives sustain this normal professionalism, many now recognise the challenge of its bad fit with the needs and conditions of hundreds of millions of resource-poor farm (RPF) families. In response to this problem, the TOT model has been adapted and extended through multi-disciplinary farming systems research (FSR) and on-farm trials. These responses retain power in the hands of scientists. Information is obtained from farmers and processed and analysed in order to identify what might be good for them. A missing element is methods to encourage and enable resource-poor farmers themselves to meet and work out what they need and want.
