Presents information on the authors' association with writer Andre Gunder Frank whom he first met in a meeting of the World Congress of Sociology in Mexico City, Mexico. Though the internationalism of the Black Liberation Movement is certainly linked to Pan Africanism, there is a broader internationalism that had been inspired by Frank and others who had come to intellectual, political, and moral maturity while laboring to understand the world in order to change it in Africa, Asia, and Latin America during the 1950s and 1960s. Frank's stance is that underdevelopment results from the same processes that have produced development, and the development of capitalism itself is also the development of underdevelopment.

344 p., Explores continuities and transformations in the construction of Afro-Cuban womanhood in Cuba between 1902 and 1958. A dynamic and evolving process, the construction of Afro-Cuban womanhood encompassed the formal and informal practices that multiple individuals--from lawmakers and professionals to intellectuals and activists to workers and their families--established and challenged through public debates and personal interactions in order to negotiate evolving systems of power. The dissertation argues that Afro-Cuban women were integral to the formation of a modern Cuban identity. Studies of pre-revolutionary Cuba dichotomize race and gender in their analyses of citizenship and national identity formation. As such, they devote insufficient attention to the role of Afro-Cuban women in engendering social transformations.
The intensification of ethno-racial protest in Latin America has led to the adoption of targeted legislation for Black and indigenous populations, signaling a new moment in race politics in this region. Existing literature has failed to account for this shift either because it held that race was not salient in Latin America, or it presumed that racial hierarchy existed, but that the obstacles to Black mobilization were insurmountable. Argues that the literature must contend with this new reality of “Black politics” in Latin America.
Este artículo examina los problemas encontrados por un programa estatal sobre multiculturalismo afro-indígena en Perú dentro del marco de la historia intelectual de la nación, sus regiones, y las ideologías que las gobiernan. En vez de presentar un recuento comparativo sobre las políticas aplicadas a afro-descendientes e indígenas a nivel regional Latinoamericano enfatizando "raza" versus "cultura", el autor sostiene que se debe prestar más atención a las formas en las que el multiculturalismo afro-indígena se "peruaniza" en el proceso de la expansión global/regional. El caso peruano es particularmente interesante por la forma en la que el Estado separa sus sujetos multiculturales por región (reconociendo los Andinos, Amazónicos, y Afro Peruanos que son implícitamente de la costa). También analiza cómo la larga fascinación de la nación con la figura del Inca permite que los Andinos tengan un estatus de elite indígena dentro de la imaginación multicultural. La influencia histórica de lo que el autor llama el "espacio Inca" sugiere posibilidades para poder comparar todos aquellos sujetos definidos como no Andinos/no Incas, y particularmente para los Afro-Peruanos e indígenas amazónicos en este contexto.;
