AGRICOLA IND 89001627, We compared the socioeconomic characteristics of a generalizable sample of displaced farm households in North Dakota with a random sample of producers who were currently operating their farming enterprises. We hypothesized that the displaced farmers would differ significantly from their currently operating counterparts in (1) the structural conditions of their operations and (2) their personal characteristics. Our hypotheses were guided by the changing structure of the agriculture literature and the adoption-diffusion literature. We obtained our data from lists of farmers who were displaced between 1981 and 1985 for financial reasons (N = 169) and from a panel of active farmers (N = 759) initially surveyed in 1985. We found that farmers displaced between 1981 and 1985 did not operate enterprises significantly different from those currently in business. Our analysis of the personal characteristics of operators revealed statistically significant differences, but these differences had limited explanatory power. We concluded that researchers should shift their attention to macrolevel variables to characterize displaced farmers.

AGRICOLA IND 89035615, We explore the relationship between adoption of farm technology and labor availability in Africa. We use a case study of the introduction of a high-yielding variety of maize in an area of Zambia to examine the different aspects of the relationship between adoption and labor availability/mobilization. The research is based on an intensive 15-month study of 23 maize farmers, survey data from 240 of their farm workers, and data collected from an ongoing integrated rural development project. The data illustrate that the shift to hybrid maize requires additional labor. farmers' inability to mobilize additional labor results in partial adoption and various compromises in the performance of recommended practices. The labor survey reveals that despite farmers' preferences for hiring older workers and female labor, children are extensively employed because of their availability. We conclude by illustrating the need for adoption research that takes the broader farming environment into account.

AGRICOLA IND 88023274, Abstract: This article conceptualizes the effects of suburban population density and land speculation on agricultural production choices, prices, and profits. A dual profit function model and a system of reduced-form price equations are used to estimate these effects for New Jersey. Results show that vegetable production is the only subsector to benefit from suburbanization, while livestock is the most adversely affected. Suburbanization reduces responsiveness to agricultural prices and discourages capital and land use. The overall impact on profits is positive when capital gains on land are included. Policy implications for farmland preservation and "right to farm" legislation are discussed.

AGRICOLA IND 89025670, A survey of farm families in five states was conducted to determine current attitudes and practices regarding the removal of pesticides from contaminated clothing. There was little evidence that respondents to this survey have been obtaining available information regarding the care of pesticide contaminated clothing. Even when the launderers did receive such information, many did not adopt the recommended procedures with the exception of storing and washing pesticide contaminated clothing separately and using hot or warm water for washing. Families in which the launderer was under 30 in age were least likely to obtain and use recommended care procedures. The relatively low rate of information requisition and use, especially among younger respondents, suggests a need for better information delivery systems as well as more compelling appeals regarding the importance of using the information once it has been received.

AGRICOLA IND 89001696, Logit analysis using data from a survey of Tulare County, California, farmers is used to examine computer and application ownership patterns in agriculture. The analysis indicates that the size of the farming operation, education level, age level, and the ownership of a farm-related nonfarming business significantly influence the probability of computer ownership; however, the type of farm products used on the farm does not. The type of application software owned is influenced primarily by the type of farm products produced, the size of the farming operation, ownership of a farm-related business, and the education level of the farmer.

AGRICOLA IND 89053984, This article describes a proposal by the authors that the distinction between interpersonal and mass media communication has had detrimental effects on the progress of communication theory and research. First, the conceptual boundaries between these two types of communication is discussed. Next, the political and historical reasons for the distinction are described. The authors provide evidence for this separation by citing studies which examine the degree to which researchers in the two areas cite each others' works in research publications. Finally, the consequences of this distinction are presented. Included in this section is a table listing the main characteristics of interpersonal, interactive, and mass media communication.

AGRICOLA IND 89051564, This study is part of a larger study which examined the development of leadership knowledge and awareness in rural communities. This part of the study focused on what adults learn through participation in community groups. The subjects of this study were 10 members of community groups located in rural counties. All subjects participated in an open-ended, semi-structured interview. Transcripts were analyzed for statements of learning. A total of 259 learning statements in eight categories were identified. The categories are self, internal knowledge, internal skills, external knowledge, external skills, broader skills, special groups and issues, and learning about the learning process. The authors also discuss factors related to learning, including: social factors, local control, democratic procedures, and satisfaction.

AGRICOLA IND 89051563, The research presented in this article examined life satisfaction and volunteer activity satisfaction in retired professionals who volunteered. The authors looked at four areas: 1) how life satisfaction and volunteer action changes as volunteers' self perceived effectiveness and opportunities for formal demonstration of competencies increases; 2) how satisfaction with the activity changes as volunteers' self-perceived effectiveness and opportunities for formal demonstration of competencies increases; 3) how life satisfaction and voluntary action change as satisfaction with the specific activity increases; and 4) how the reasons for participation affect the first three relationships. This article reports the findings from two questionnaires given to 39 volunteers at the beginning and end of a six month project. The scales used measured: self-esteem, morale, reactions to the project, social alienation, voluntary action, reasons for volunteering, and motivation. The authors found that these volunteers' perceived effectiveness was associated with increased program satisfaction, and that reasons for involvement create variation in implications for voluntary action.
