AGRICOLA IND 88021937, Abstract: Extension economists in many states develop decision aids to assist agricultural producers in evaluating farm participation. It is important that these analytical procedures yield reliable results. Consistency among procedures is also important when they are used in formulating competitive bids for programs like the Dairy Termination Program. Seven Dairy Termination Program break-even bid procedures are examined. The results show that the analytical approaches are conceptually quite different and that numerical results derived for an example farm are inconsistent.
Reisner, INTERPAKS, Information flow among research and extension organizations has traditionally been portrayed as emanating from the research system. An alternative perspective of information flow in the research and extension system expands the number of participants in the model to include farmers, agribusiness people, legislators, government officials, and scientists. This perspective adds three dimensions previously neglected: the researcher is seen as producing research in response to demands of clients; it is recognized that some clients have more access to the research system than others; diffusion is seen largely as giving certain clients what they initially requested. This perspective is illustrated by the information flows that must take place in sorghum research.

AGRICOLA IND 87058773, A sample survey was conducted to evaluate five newsletters produced by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries for graziers in western Queensland. The results revealed that readership of the newsletters was high and information had been useful in decision making on properties. Recurrent themes arose in the features respondents most liked in their newsletter. Graziers liked information relevant to their situation, new ideas, practicality, variety, timeliness, clarity of expression and diagrams which assisted understanding. Many graziers recognized intrinsic value in the communication; that newsletters were regular, personal, and locally produced also made them highly valued. The results highlighted the important role of these newsletters and enabled minor distribution problems to be addressed. They also indicated subject areas which could be accorded higher priority.

AGRICOLA IND 89054651, Since our sample includes both types of farmers who have and who have not contacted extension agents during the year, a Tobit model has been used to estimate the demand for extension service. The results show that the demand for extension service is directly related to the level of farm assets, farming experience, and level of education. The demand for extension service is significantly higher for white farmers as compared to black farmers, ceteris paribus.

James F. Evans Collection, Cooperative Extension was established as an educational and problem-solving institution in 1914. Since that time, the tools of instructional technology have changed substantially. Cooperative Extension needs to use current and emerging technologies that will permit it to operate in an efficient and effective manner. The computer is a technological tool that offers many opportunities for improving the delivery of Extension programs. The Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Penn State is exploring several ways of using computers to enhance Extension programs in water quality. This article describes four applications of computer technology designed to address the information-age needs of Extension agents and clientele. (author)

CCOD Agric/Bio Issue 9/21/90, The land-grant extension system has long been known as the best educational network in the world. Extension home economists are focusing much of their efforts in food, nutrition and health programming. Extension personnel are collaborating with other agricultural health professionals in programs designed to improve the nutritional quality of diets consumed by individuals in the United States. James F. Evans Collection; AGRICOLA IND 92048494, Mathematical logic models were used to examine farmers' information preferences for marketing, production, and financial decisions. Dependent variables represented the preferred information source category: Cooperative Extension Service, printed, broadcast, specialist, and other sources. Independent variables included farm and business characteristics. In general, farmers preferred information from printed sources, and the Cooperative Extension Service ranked highly as an information source. Results did not support the contention that farmers are substituting specialist services for information received from the Cooperative Extension Service. (author)

James F. Evans Collection, This paper analyzes factors that affect innovativeness on family farms under Arab social and institutional systems in the Nazareth region in the north of Israel. The adoption of five different innovations was studied and an "index of innovativeness" was constructed. Innovativeness was found to be affected positively by risk tolerance, extension, and water quota allotment and affected negatively by the farm's land area. The latter result supports the hypothesis that a small land area provides an incentive to adopt high-payoff, input-intensive innovations. Innovativeness is affected by extension but not necessarily by education. this result implies that farmers with elementary school education are capable of adopting complex technologies if proper extension services are provided. Current Contents Agr/Bio, The emphasis on cow records in Malaysian dairy extension programmes reflects the importance of herd fertility in the economics of dairying. Manual record keeping has not been able to make an impact on management due to difficulties experienced in quality control of the data and in analyzing the data to produce useful information for farm managers. Computerized recording systems have been in use in Malaysia since 1985, both on government farms and in the smallholder dairy sector. The aim of both is firstly to improve farm efficiency by the provision of information to managers and extension workers and secondly to provide information for departmental planning purposes. The systems used in Malaysia are outlined, and the results over the first three years of operation are summarized. (author)
