James F. Evans Collection, All of the 100 county Extension offices in Iowa have a set of six water quality videotapes available for use by clientele. The state water quality Extension specialist designed the high quality tapes, each 20 minutes long, to be viewed at home by clients who had water questions. The question was: "Should video by used again as an educational delivery method?" Responses to a telephone survey of county office assistants indicated a wide variation in the use of video tapes, although over 75% liked the idea of information via tapes. The counties needed assistance with publicity and displays, something that area media specialists might provide. (original)

James F. Evans Collection; See C04120 for original; AGRICOLA IND 90027729, Despite its increased use in recent years, evaluation of videotape application to non-formal adult education has been limited. Dairy specialists at Cornell University believing that a videotape might work well, produced a 25 minute videotape as part of an educational program on proper milking procedures. Although a workshop setting was the intended format for viewing the videotape, it was clear the videotape might be used in less-structured settings, such as a farmer's home. Therefore, it was developed to be self-explanatory, with a supplemental bulletin. Dairy farmers liked having a videotape as part of the workshop. Furthermore, the videotaped-based program lead to improvement in knowledge and change in attitude among farmers. The value of follow-up contact to understand the extent of actual impact was also demonstrated.

James F. Evans Collection; Gail, For upscale and younger farmers, videotex and teletext are emerging as a "best source" for relatively perishable or highly volatile information like market prices but otherwise seem to complement rather than replace existing sources of more stable information. (original)
James F. Evans Collection; AGRICOLA IND 89018376, The Extension Service historically has sought and used new communication methods and the author believes that the satellite television will have its era in Extension. Although the use of television in Extension is not new, economics, changes in FCC public service requirements, public television, and a smaller farming audience have forced much of the Extension programming off the air. The author cites seven reasons why the television renaissance may lead to an increased use of the medium by Extension. Dr. Whiting provides an overview of videotape and satellite video teleconferencing in Extension and details the Ohio State Extension experience with satellite video teleconferencing. The article concludes with 16 lessons learned by Ohio that can be helpful to others considering satellite video teleconferencing and asserts that there is a place for satellite and video technology in Extension youth and adult educational programs.

Four segments, totaling 82 minutes, of a planned 9-segment series on conservation tillage took 11 days for field shots on 20 farms in 11 counties, about 450 minutes of original footage, and more than 100 hours for editing.
