These materials involve the production and airing of an environmentally sensitive television documentary, "The Price of Bounty," and the considerable controversy that arose from airing it. The program was produced by the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois, through a grant from the Illinois Department of Agriculture with funds provided by fertilizer users. Content involved effects of soil erosion and crop chemicals on the environment, including quality of water supplies. Materials include correspondence, production information, videotapes, newspaper clippings, proceedings of faculty discussions, and other items. They reflect the sensitivities and dynamics in relationships among producers, agribusinesses, communities, environmental groups, farm organizations and universities. They also include expressions of concern in the agricultural community about public perceptions of environmental responsibility, viewpoints about the role of universities in providing information on such matters, and responses by the Department of Agriculture.

James F. Evans Collection, Ham, Mimeographed, 1994. 1 p. Presented at the Society for Nutrition Education, Portland, OR, July 16-20, 1994., As relatively little is known about the impact on viewers of TV health education programs, the purpose of this study was to utilize health communication theory to evaluate the short term impact of 'The Rhythm of Health' T.V. series on nutrition and health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors fo viewers. A quasi-experimental, single-blind, pre and post-intervention evaluation was conducted during mid-1993 amongst 37 adult volunteers from different occupational fields. The research hypotheses were that there would be significant positive differences between mean score increases in 1) correct factual responses, 2) preferred attitudes, and 3) recommended behaviors, of subjects exposed to the TV series (experimental group) versus those who were not exposed (control group). Both groups completed two quasi-identical, self-administered, validated questionnaires approximately one week before and one week after the intervention (experimental group only) had taken place. Results revealed mean score increases for the exposed group which were generally greater than those of the similar unexposed group for knowledge, attitudes, intended and current behaviors in that order. These findings were, therefore, highly positive and supportive of the K-A-B Learning Hierarchy. Potential links were also suggested between improvement in attitudes and knowledge, and individuals who were less-educated, were light T.V. viewers, and used or preferred television as a source of health information. The findings have implications for planning nutrition and health education via mass media channels.

First published May 7, 2019. In press., We analyzed comedy series for food and beverage references, with particular attention to their type of presentation, along with the characteristics of actors associated with the references. Because the generally positive tone of comedy series can exert affective influence over audiences, the result that clearly unhealthy products appeared more often (food: 51.6%; beverage: 40.5%) than clearly healthy ones (food: 11.2%; beverage: 19.6%) could be especially problematic. Moreover, women (56.5%; men: 47.4%) and African American characters (62.7%; Caucasians: 51.5%; Other: 44.7%) were significantly more often associated with unhealthy foods, which could prompt stereotypes of such individuals.
