15 pages., via online journal, Genetic modification (GM) science has received considerable pushback from consumers despite the research finding GM products are safe for consumption. This may be partly due to the disconnect between consumers and farms since most consumers are disconnected from the farm by at least three generations. The largest consumer population is composed of millennials, which is the generation furthest removed from the farm which may mean they need to be educated differently about GM science than other generations. The purpose of this research was to determine if there were generational differences regarding the perceived attributes of GM science to inform the development of extension programs designed to educate consumers about GM science. A survey was used to collect consumers’ perceptions of GM science. The respondents were grouped into generational classifications and perceptions between groups were compared. The findings revealed generations do perceived GM science differently and extension programs should be designed for specific generational audiences.

James F. Evans Collection, Ham, Mimeographed, 1994. 1 p. Presented at the Society for Nutrition Education, Portland, OR, July 16-20, 1994., Two hundred and twelve Idaho citizens participated in the "Train the Trainer" Safety and Food excellence (S.A.F.E.) educational program during 1993. Idaho's effort was part of an eight state strategy to reduce the risk of illness from foods served to individuals with weakened immune systems. Funding was obtained through the FY92 ES-USDA Food Safety and Quality Initiative. S.A.F.E., a four hour leader training program, is an action-oriented program which teaches professionals, paraprofessionals an volunteers to present education programs aimed at changing specific food handling practices. Individuals who work with the elderly or other high-risk population groups were targeted. The seven Idaho programs were team taught by the Extension Food Safety Specialist, a county Extension Home Economist and an Environmental Health Specialist from the local health district. Participants received three food safety posters, learned appropriate food safety practices and teaching strategies and set personal behavior goals. Mean knowledge scores increased from 89% to 96%. Ninety seven percent of the participants set personal food safety behavior goals. At a three month self-reported evaluation, a majority met their goals "most of the time" and almost all met their goal "some of the time". Over 950 food safety posters have been distributed. Estimates suggests each poster has been seen by an average of 25 individuals. The trained program leaders have utilized food safety educational strategies from the S.A.F.E. workshop and reached between 4 and 282 others.

12 pages., The rapidly expanding end-use markets for cassava implies a surge in the production and processing of cassava roots into various value-added forms. This study investigated the information needs of cassava farmers on cassava value addition technologies in Oyo State, Nigeria, to ascertain areas of information gap for farmers to maximally exploit the opportunities inherent in the product value addition. Using a multistage sampling procedure, 130 registered cassava farmers were sampled and interviewed. Data were collected on respondents’ personal and enterprise characteristics, access to information, perceived benefits and constraints to accessing information and information needs on cassava value addition. Data were analysed using percentages, means and correlational analysis at p=0.05. Results indicate that respondents were married (91.5%), with mean farm size and farming experience of 2.3 ha and 20.1±13.8 years, respectively, while fellow farmers ranked first as major source of information. Though respondents were constrained with low income (70.0%), they reckoned that if they had access to information on value addition, their postharvest loss will be reduced (89.2%). Respondents had information gap on information needs on cassava adhesives (1st), glucose syrups (2nd) and confectionaries (3rd). Farming experience (r = -.236), constraints (r = -.288) and access to sources of information were significantly related to respondents’ information needs. It is recommended that information on improved cassava value addition technologies be made available to cassava farmers through relevant sources, especially during emergencies coupled with hands –on training for effective application of information acquired.
Keywords: Information needs, Information sources, Access to information, Cassava value addition technologies.

James F. Evans Collection; Three copies; Also published in Farm Futures, 15 (5) : 10H (1987 May), Mimeographed, [198-]. 1 p., Cooperative extension offices in the U.S. are using an experimental system called interactive video because it lets viewers participate. The program is a combination of television, computers, and video games used to teach farmers cash flow planning. The project is one of three the University of Nebraska is doing for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). A USDA survey found that 95% of farmers using the program would recommend it to a friend and one-third of first time users felt they learned a great deal. An advantage of interactive videos would be to give basic instructions and to free extension agents to teach other specialized skills.
