Developing countries due to financial constraints and low gross national product level can not finance universal schooling. Non-formal vocational education centres which can combine education with production and training could be one of the solutions. These centers can exhibit and propagate technology best suited for the particular community needs. Selection of right communication techniques involving dialogue rather than monologue or command would thus be necessary for the transfer of appropriate technology, which again should be suited to the level of understanding and adoption of the recipient groups. The paper discusses a new type of non-formal vocational school for integrated rural development. Such nonformal schools should combine elementary education with training and production to create self-generating rural economy for rural development. (original).

Explores the role of applied research institutes in the transfer of technology to developing countries. Several hypotheses about technological change in developed economies are extended to this context. Investigates 20 projects from four institutes in order to generalize the hypotheses. The conclusions are that projects, where significant resources are devoted to defining issues and market needs, providing for interpersonal contact and communication, and developing personnel through work in firms or applied laboratories in other countries, were most likely to produce useful results. Suggests that increased focus on these issues could have high leverage in expanding the importance of research institutes' activities both in generating and adapting technology and in transferring technology successfully.
Evans, cited reference, The importance of community structure in agricultural development has been emphasized in several studies (Van den Ban 1960; Dasgupta 1968; Fliegel 1969). For a structural interpretation of village differences in agricultural development in India, consideration of caste structure is an obvious first step; for caste constitutes the basis of Indian village societies. This paper attempts to develop a theoretical scheme for relating caste structure to agricultural development by using the concept of caste dominance which was originally used by Srinivas (1968) to explain the process of Sanskritization. The specific objective of this paper is to present both a logical and an empirical basis for understanding this relationship by developing a typology for villages in terms of caste structure which would be variably related to levels of agricultural development. Women’s empowerment has been an integral part of the discussion on normative coherence for development, but its implementation is not very effective in Myanmar. Gender must be kept at the forefront of policy analysis in order to avoid unintended consequences for women.
Purpose
The article argues that the Government of Myanmar lacks initiatives on women’s economic empowerment, but that social enterprises could prove to be a more appropriate way to implement international norms in gender equality.
Methods and approach
This case study uses descriptive research to verify how social entrepreneurship can contribute to women's empowerment by increasing women’s participation in the labour market. The empirical part of this study is based on field research undertaken in February 2019.
Findings
In Myanmar, there is still a gap between normative policies and social practices. Women’s legal and actual equality cannot be realized by law and philosophy alone, but also depends on a shift in political, economic, and social actions to ensure that women can participate in the public sphere on an equal basis as men, and enjoy equal economic opportunities. The article explores the role that social enterprises are already playing as an example of how international development norms are implemented at the local level.
Policy implications
The article highlights the appropriateness of social enterprises as catalysts of gender equality and as agents of normative gender coherence for development. Social enterprises take an inclusive and sustainable approach to addressing issues, making women’s livelihoods central.
