AGRICOLA IND 90032709, In today's information-based society, home economists must be able to access and to utilize modern communications and information technologies such as electronic mail, computer conferencing, and desktop publishing. Traditional communications courses which form part of most home economics undergraduate curricula may not prepare them for this task. In this paper, a model of purposeful communication is presented which provides a framework within which the use of modern communications and information technologies can be viewed. In the purposeful model, communication is developed in a systematic manner to achieve specific objectives. It is suggested that home economists will apply these new technologies in the preparation and delivery stages of communication. The second article in this two-part series describes the development of a graduate level course in modern communications for home economists.

James F. Evans Collection, This paper proposes that rural people can use a participatory rural newspaper as a rallying point for formal and informal discussions with development agents to improve their own life situation. The future of communication for development in the Third World lies in the shift from the use of big to small media like participatory rural newspaper. The micro model of communication for development presented here may be applied to other localized media instead of the participatory rural newspaper. But the adaption would require adjustments both in the theoretical as well as procedural approach to suit the particular mini medium. (original)
James F. Evans Collection, Participation in rural development programs that organize members into local cooperative groups can alter the decision-making environment facing couples to reflect some of the negative consequences of childbearing. This study uses data from Nepal, collected through a combination of ethnographic and survey methods, to test the effects of participation in such a development program on fertility behavior. Results demonstrate that program participants are much more likely to use contraceptives to limit their fertility than are non-participants. The study provides empirical support for theories linking this type of institutional change to fertility and indicates a policy option that can allow some negative consequences of childbearing to affect couples' fertility decisions.
