Despite the difficulty differentiating between the symptomology of dissociative disorders and schizophrenia, Black people of African and Caribbean descent in the UK continue to be diagnosed with schizophrenia and over-represented within the mental health care system. The reasons why remain illusive; however, some researchers have begun asking whether racism plays an integral part. Given that Black people often given racism as a contributing factor to their mental state, and the difficulty differentiating between the symptomology of dissociative disorders and schizophrenia, this study examined the relation between mental representations that might be indicative of the subjective experience of racism and dissociative experiences as evidence of a trauma-related response.
Focuses on the performativity of Black beauty shame as it transforms or intensifies the meanings of parts of the body in Jamaica and its UK diaspora. Uses extracts from interviews with UK Jamaican heritage women. The women’s critique of the shaming event shows that shame is undone through dis-identification as speakers draw on alternative beauty discourses to produce new beauty subjectivities.
Draws on qualitative data exploring the experiences of first-generation middle-class Black Caribbean-heritage parents, their own parents, and their children. Focuses on the different ways in which race and class intersect in shaping attitudes towards education and subsequent educational practices.

375 p, O núcleo central da tese é uma reflexão sobre aquilo que na literatura antropológica especializada tem-se convencionado chamar de branqueamento. Em oposição às interpretações correntes segundo as quais a "ideologia do branqueamento" teriasurgido, no Brasil no final do século XIX, como uma espécie de derivação ou readaptação das "teorias raciais ortodoxas", argumenta-se que o "ideário do branqueamento" estava presente nos fundamentos da sociedade colonial brasileira. Paracomprovar isso, tornou-se necessária uma "reconstrução histórica" do conceito de negro. Esse percurso mostra que a idéia do branqueamento passou, ao longo dos séculos, por diversas reformulações devidas às lentas mudanças na concepção de mundo ea contextos sociais e históricos específicos. Foi-se ajustando aos valores supremos de cada época, de concepções religioso-morais, biológico-"progressistas" a um ideário culturalista. A tese defende também a idéia de que a persistência da"ideologia do branqueamento" está vinculada, em primeiro lugar, às características específicas das relações de poder no Brasil. A resistência característica das estruturas patrimoniais à formalização de direitos e deveres individuais e de idéiascomo igualdade e diferença manifesta uma postura sociopolítica que tende a se opor a qualquer tentativa de burocratizar processos de inclusão e exclusão. Much study has been dedicated to the experiences and success of Caribbean immigrant women and men in service and domestic roles. The study explores these professional immigrant women's experiences attaining career success in the United States racial society. Data was obtained from 12 professional Caribbean immigrant women using semi-structured interviews conducted by the researcher.
"In our Cold War fight with Castro, (we were) willing to subsidize Cubans to leave to come here and at the same time lock Haitians out. That is not fair, and we deserve a different policy," [Jesse L. Jackson Sr.] said. He said the U.S. pays to bring Cubans here, subsidizes them, but pays to send Haitians back to Haiti. "That's not fair," he stated. "Haiti fought for our freedom." "The Cubans are political refugees looking for political freedom, and they're given money to come, but, the Haitians are economic refugees so they must go back. There are more Haitians who've died... than Cubans," Jackson said calling for an end to the double standard of refugees between Cuba and Haitians seeking to come to America.
