Presented at the Society for Nutrition Education, Portland, OR, July 16-20, 1994., This study was taken up with the objective of developing primers that could be used to impart nutrition education after literating the adults. Twenty five illiterate women of Muthumariamanpuram of North Coimbatore belonging to low income group were selected for imparting education. The family composition and prevalence of illiteracy of the selected subjects were elicited using a proforma. The investigator taught the subjects to read and write Tamil. Initial nutritional knowledge of the subjects were tested. Two nutrition education primers were prepared and the subjects were taught the primer lessons for three months. Nutrition education was imparted by visual and audio-visual aids. Supplementary readers on health education were used to educate them. It was found that poor economic status was the cause for illiteracy. Nutrition education improved learning skills and awareness of the nutritional facts and improvement of dietary patterns and practices.
Phase II, Examines how individuals are connected to each other by communication flows in a social system and its effect of diffusion and adoption of an innovation. The majority of farmers in villages seek information on farm and other related matters from their friends, neighbors and relatives which speaks of the role of interpersonal communication in diffusion of innovations. Farmers in a progressive village sought information on high yielding wheat varieties from the best farmers of the village and farmers in non-progressive villages sought information from their friends. A similar trend was observed in diffusion of high yielding rice varieties information in an innovative and a non-innovative village. Relates the interpersonal relationships with the adoption of particular innovations.
This article originally was a paper presented at the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' (IFLA) General Conference, Aug. 18-24, 2002, in Glasgow, Scotland., 10 p., Often funding agencies and donor governments face the question should they support information and communication technology (ICT) activities in their development projects. Should the money be invested in computers and communication devices or will it be better spent on food, shelter, health and education? The choice need not be "either/or." If used intelligently and innovatively, ICTs can form an integral component of developmental projects, as is shown by the award-winning Information Village project of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation. The important point to remember is that one does not have to use technology because it is there, but one uses it if there is a genuine advantage. In any developmental program, people and their contexts should decide how one goes about implementing developmental interventions. The needs of the people and the best means to satisfy them should determine the whole program. Often ICT-based development projects do not bring in the expected results because of undue emphasis on technology. Against this background, the factors that led to the success of the Pondicherry experience are analyzed.
