James F. Evans Collection, The choice by Telecom Australia of the Digital Radio Concentrator System (DRCS) as the mainstay for providing services to outback Australia has raised wide interest. This paper provides some background to this decision by way of discussing the DRCS and the main alternative, a satellite system. The characteristics of these two alternatives are discussed and a comparison is made on the basis of cost. This comparison, based on the latest industry figures, reveals that the DCRS is till the most cost-effective means of providing services in outback Australia by 1990. (author)

19 p., The farming community, in many parts of Australia, is widely dispersed and heavily dependent upon communication both within the community and outside. In this preliminary paper, we explore the information needs and information flows of the rural sector and consider the farm as the potential focus of a virtual community. A virtual community may form a basis both for electronic commerce, in the traditional sense, and for rich telecommunications-mediated social activity. We describe factors apparently inhibiting the implementation of rural virtual communities in Australia and finally, we introduce a research project that will evaluate a model of inhibiting factors for the development of virtual communities within a real-world rural setting.

AGRICOLA IND 87058773, A sample survey was conducted to evaluate five newsletters produced by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries for graziers in western Queensland. The results revealed that readership of the newsletters was high and information had been useful in decision making on properties. Recurrent themes arose in the features respondents most liked in their newsletter. Graziers liked information relevant to their situation, new ideas, practicality, variety, timeliness, clarity of expression and diagrams which assisted understanding. Many graziers recognized intrinsic value in the communication; that newsletters were regular, personal, and locally produced also made them highly valued. The results highlighted the important role of these newsletters and enabled minor distribution problems to be addressed. They also indicated subject areas which could be accorded higher priority.
