[Maas Ran], the father of seven children was born in Colon, Panama. As a young man, his father wanted him to pursue a career in theology. He worked at many jobs, including journalism and sales. He loved the Big Boy stories and often used his knack for humour in his sales job. He was a self-taught actor who was the first dark-skinned Jamaican to perform in a Pantomime cast. And he is being credited as the creator of the Anancy character, with lisp and all. A diabetic, Maas Ran died in Toronto, Canada, and is buried at the National Heroe's Park.
453 p., Offers an anthropological interpretation of cultural discourses about the body found in literature, visual narratives and archival sources throughout 19th century in Spanish colonial Havana. These discourses show a pressing concern with the "manners" of bodies, the ways they moved, how they occupied space, and how they managed sensations and emotions to negotiate power and prestige in the highly stratified Havana's society. Concerns for the manners of the body became the discursive domain of the rising planter and intellectual elite of Cuban creoles. They often expressed these concerns in normalizing terms such as "good manners," "good taste," and "tone." Argues that these and other highly embodied, interlocking moral, sensory, affective and aesthetic categories such as nobility, respect or " sabor " became focal indexes of the social status of individuals in colonial society.

Throughout, the authors emphasize a Caribbean approach that is engaged with and aware of a range of existing theories but does not uncritically adopt external frameworks that are inadequate for a rounded Caribbean critical practice.

Considers deployments of the term ‘Men who have Sex with Men’ (MSM) through what the author terms a ‘Risk-Rights’ strategy in international development. Examining two Caribbean initiatives – the 2011 documentary film Living in the Shadows and the Guyanese NGO Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) – this paper documents and evaluates this strategy. Living in the Shadows demonstrates the dominant characterization of MSM as murderous, while SASOD's engagement is more consciously critical of the strategy's limits.

"Carry me ackee go a Linstead Market, not a quattie wud sell" is a line in the popular Jamaican folk song 'Linstead Market'. Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica as well as a component of the national dish ñ ackee and codfish. Ackee is derived from the original name Ankye which comes from the Twi language of Ghana. The botanical name of the fruit ñ Blighia Sapida ñ was given in honour of Captain William Bligh of "Mutiny on the Bounty" fame, who in 1793 took plants of the fruit from Jamaica to England. Captain Bligh also brought the first breadfruit to Jamaica. Before this, the ackee was unknown to science. In 1778 Dr Thomas Clarke, one of the earliest propagators of the tree, introduced it to the eastern parishes. There are two main types of ackee identified by the colour of the aril. That with a soft yellow aril is known as 'butter' and 'cheese' is hard and cream-coloured. Ackee contains a poison (hypoglcin).
One of the central goals of archaeology is the definition of regional cultural succession. Since at least the 1960s, archaeology has purported to have moved beyond the strictures of Culture History, and yet the constructs of that paradigm (styles, periods, cultures) continue to be used routinely. This work aims to show that by doing so, one is still implicitly subscribing to that theoretical perspective's assumptions and biases.
