The dominant explanation offered for this situation is the prevalence of fatherlessness in the Black community. This popular discourse assumes both that Black/Caribbean families must be dysfunctional if fathers are not present, and that single Black mothers do not have the requisite skills or commitment to prepare their young men to become responsible adults.
