"Of the five nineteen-century general-interest newspapers that have survived to present, the largest is the Daily Gleaner. Established as a literary paper in 1833 by Joshua DeCordova, the paper, the following year, became an advertising sheet, DeCordova's Advertising Sheet. The present Gleaner dates its existence to 1834. ...Except for two Roman Catholic newspapers, the only other newspapers in the region that were developed before the twentieth century are the Nassau Gaurdian, Voice of St. Lucia, Barbados Advocate News and Bermuda Royal Gazette.
