(ISNAR Linkages Discussion Paper No. 6)., The research-extension liaison services in Nigeria have evolved from a small regional group, attached to a ministry, to an autonomous institute with nationwide responsibilities. The size, mandate and number of clients of the institute have expanded considerably in the course of this evolution. This paper traces the changes in the organizational structure of the liaison services at each stage of their development, and shows how structural factors have interacted with other factors to influence performance. INTERPAKS, Mimeographed, 1981. Paper presented at World Bank Symposium on Promoting Increased Food Production in the 1980's, January 5-9, 1981. 38 p., Provides a state-of-the-art understanding of the critical issues and lessons about agricultural extension programs and the role of extension in different agricultural production systems. Identifies the major components of various extension approaches and describes a process to strengthen the linkages between agricultural research and farmers who are the target audience as well as the basic building block of all farming systems. Concludes with several suggestions of ways to improve existing extension systems.

(ISNAR Linkages Discussion Paper No. 8)., This paper focuses on the links between rice research and extension in the Matara District of Sri Lanka. Various formal linkage mechanisms were set up when the training and visit system of extension was implemented nationwide, including regional technical working groups, research-extension dialogues, bi-weekly training, and the use of subject-matter officers as liaison between research and extension. These mechanisms improved the links but could not overcome the poor communication and great social distance between researchers and extension workers. After World Bank project funding ended, the mechanisms could not be fully sustained. (original)
