Byrnes Collection, International Fertilizer Development Center in behalf of a contract with the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation. 61 pages, In this report, interest is focused on whether fertilizer assists the rural poor, particularly the small farmers and sharecroppers to increase their economic status relative to large farmers. Much of the data used was drawn from small samples that may or may not be representative of Bangladesh.

INTERPAKS, Mimeographed, 1977. Paper presented at the Symposium on Risk and Uncertainty in Decision Processes of Small Farmers in Less Developed Countries, San Diego, CA, July 31-August 3, 1977. 27 p., Describes research towards the generation of production technologies appropriate to the conditions of small farms. notes the conclusion drawn about the decision processes followed by small farmers with regard to what, how much and how to produce, soil preparation, seeding or planting, use of fertilizer, weed control, diseases and insect control, harvesting, and product handling. Despite efforts to transfer improved technologies, small farmers have been reluctant to adopt them, mainly because they perceive them to be inappropriate for their particular conditions and resources and because the element of risk is too strong.

Full Title: Etablissement d'un double courant d'information paysan chercheur a propos d'enquetes sur l'elevage des petits ruminants dans le nord de la Haute-Volta. [Establishing a two-way flow of information between farmer and researcher in connection with surveys on the breeding of small ruminants in the northern part of Upper Volta.], INTERPAKS, Paris, France: Institut d'Elevage et de Medecine Veterinaire de Pays Tropicaux, 1981. (Paper prepared as working document no. 4 for the Workshop on Linkages Between Agricultural Research and Farmers in Developing Countries, May 13-14, 1981, Paris, France, sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.) 4 p., Describes the development of a methodology for establishing a two-way flow of information between small farmers and researchers, mainly to communicate to researchers the farmers' needs and requests. The approach uses investigators, many from the health services, who were given one week's prior training by the researchers. The researchers periodically checked the information collected by joining them on field trips. The data collected were processed by computer. The resulting system insured two-way flow of information linking local staff and researchers with regular transfer of information. Includes the complete questionnaire used in the project.

James F. Evans Collection, In: Gajendra Singh, J.H. de Goede, eds. Proceedings of the International Conference on Rural Development Technology : an Integrated Approach, June 21-24, 1977, Bangkok, Thailand. Bangkok, Thailand: Asian Institute of Technology, 1977. p. 3-13., The Asian small farmers must be reached directly if they are to share in the benefits of development. In order to reach them, channels must be built for delivery of goods, technology, services and credit. Farmer organizations are essential links to this delivery system and, thus, are crucial to rural development. In the long run, rural development must embrace all activities for the betterment of rural livelihood. However, to lump many activities of a different nature together and call the product "integrated" has led to the failure of many projects. True integration should be built around activities directed at solving critical farm level problems faced by large numbers of farmers. (original)
