Based on his analysis of García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits, Hoeg comes to the conclusion that contemporary Latin American fiction and criticism are characterized by rejecting technology as it is imposed by "foreign domination" and believing that it "leads inevitably to disastrous consequences."
