In the colonial Americas and especially in the Caribbean, black slaves were often influenced by the rumor that a king had decreed their emancipation. The refusal of slaveowners and colonial authorities to honor this imaginary decree set off revolts from the mid-seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, their number peaking after the outbreak of the French Revolution.
