Analysis of this agricultural leader's views suggests Bailey sought "not to develop a more efficient, productive, and profitable agriculture, but to advance the larger cultural ideals of a 'self-sustaining' agriculture and personal happiness."

It was essential to prime the pumps, so that self-sustaining local action could be generated. The importance of top-down communication should not be underestimated. It was necessary to start the engine of local initiative and action. Once local participation was initiated, open communication in all directions is necessary to strengthen and maintain it."

Paper presented at annual meeting of The Rural Sociological Society, Hotel Somerset, Boston, Mass., USA, Aug. 26, 1968, This paper describes a five-component system with ten major internal linkages which may be used as a model for studying information flow in any rural agricultural social system. The major components are production, supply, marketing, research and extension/education. In addition, definitions are offered of the crucial variables affecting efficiency and effectiveness of communication via the linkages. Audience, message, channel, treatment and impact are described. Based on the system model and the defined variables, simple mathematical formulas are given which illustrate the relationships in impact and efficiency, and which may be used in computer simulation of information flow, or in planning change, in any rural social system.
23 pages., via database., Results of this study indicate that the consumption of handmade and locally made agrifood products increases for consumers who read nutrition labels and health claim information and for those with higher income and are younger. Authors offer suggestions for improving communications.
