Via Poynteronline. 3 pages, Author argues that "journalism on a smaller scale provides a bigger opportunity to connect with (and answer to) readers and viewers." Cites an experience in which a reporter at a small daily newspaper on the coast of rural North Carolina told her readers that the water was polluted with cancer-causing chemicals and that city leaders had known about the pollutants for many years without doing anything. She received a Pulitzer Gold Medal for Meritorious Public Service, but a hostile reception, locally, by people upset by the uproar she had caused in the community.

These materials involve the production and airing of an environmentally sensitive television documentary, "The Price of Bounty," and the considerable controversy that arose from airing it. The program was produced by the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois, through a grant from the Illinois Department of Agriculture with funds provided by fertilizer users. Content involved effects of soil erosion and crop chemicals on the environment, including quality of water supplies. Materials include correspondence, production information, videotapes, newspaper clippings, proceedings of faculty discussions, and other items. They reflect the sensitivities and dynamics in relationships among producers, agribusinesses, communities, environmental groups, farm organizations and universities. They also include expressions of concern in the agricultural community about public perceptions of environmental responsibility, viewpoints about the role of universities in providing information on such matters, and responses by the Department of Agriculture.
