When Tappa Zukie asked "People are you ready?" They chorused "Blow! Oh Lord!". Two of the Tamlins came out in locks-shaking, dancing fashion, settling to sing harmony on How I Wish It Would Rain to the third member's lead vocals. With a cry of "non-stop!" they went from Go Away Dream to Ting A Ling, Wildflower among the ending slow songs. Admiral Bailey brought up intermission with a crowd-pleasing mixture of humour, 'Delia move' and 'Samurai' dancing and Winston 'Merritone' Blake playing Long Story and Left With A Broken Heart in the break. Then it was singers all the way to the end, Gregory Isaacs delivering Number One and Rumors, Night Nurse coming before a Ragamuffin encore. Johnny Clarke's hit machine rolled out Move Outta Babylon and None Shall Escape the Judgement. Culture's Two Sevens Clash and I'm Not Ashamed came before Conqueror.
In the music's hundred year existence, the tradition's greatest innovators (Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman, just to name a few...) have been black. However, Jazz music has since evolved into an international and even a universal level, to the point where we now have: Latin Jazz/Brazilian Jazz/Cuban Jazz/Japanese Jazz etc...Basically, most cultures around the world found their niches in Jazz music. Over the years, Haiti has been home to many great jazz musicians, unfortunately with the dominance of Konpa Music, many Haitians have sort-of ignored this genre of music, and these musicians, but there are a small minority of Haitians in Haiti and abroad that are very fond of Jazz music and have shown serious support to the Haitians musicians who dedicated their lives and craft to playing Jazz music, despite the fact that it's not the dominant and popular art form in Haiti.
Rise Up channels the spirit of the elders with cameos by Fred Locks, Sly Dunbar. Robbie Shakespeare, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Toots Hibberts and Brushy One String among others. Industry stalwarts like producers Mikey Bennett and Carlo Less are among those narrating the story which highlights the unique musical quality of Jamaicans.
Morgan Heritage though, on their part, should bring out tons of new fans to the festival because of their legendary musical accomplishments. The band of brothers, sisters and other relatives, off springs of famed singer Denroy Morgan, have been able to comfortably navigate the various manifestation of reggae, from dancehall to lovers rock and roots rock. Along the way they have scored numerous hits gleaned from their several well written albums. They include Reggae bring back love, Don't haffi dread, She's still loving me, Nothing to smile about and Down by the river.
August 17 marked the 123rd year of PanAfrican leader Marcus Garvey's birth. It is also 35 years since Burning Spear recorded 'Marcus Garvey', one of the seminal albums of popular music. [Spear] agreed, and in a matter of weeks, he and back-up singers Rupert Wellington and Delroy Hines were at Randy's studio in downtown Kingston, where [Ruby] had assembled several of Jamaica's top musicians to record a passionate homage to the country's first national hero.
