This article explores the role of traditional objectivity in newspaper coverage of the nomination in Alaska of a socialist commissioner of environmental conservation and the subsequent "framing" of public discussion.
17 pages., Online via UI e-subscription, Author described a process which led to consensus on a new environmental law mediated by legislators and the governor. Identified key elements in the process: (1) the issue must be ripe for action; the parties must feel something may happen imminently without their input. (2) the issue must be complex, not likely to be addressed satisfactorily without cooperative problem solving. (3) the parties must be patient and committed to spending whatever time it takes to reach an agreement.
Case analysis of inadequacies in the culture of "advocacy journalism by foundation-based researchers and academics." Documents flaws in the approach of a "senior policy analysis" employed by a conservative foundation to assess he effectiveness of the United Nations (in this case, the role of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN in advancing agricultural development.
Author examines the way press photographers recorded the strike, "stating that the impact of the photographs was in the way they emphasized the importance of on-the-spot news photography. For the first time in California press photography, a 35mm camera was used."
