This article explores the role of traditional objectivity in newspaper coverage of the nomination in Alaska of a socialist commissioner of environmental conservation and the subsequent "framing" of public discussion.

Identified key elements in the process: (1) the issue must be ripe for action; the parties must feel something may happen imminently without their input. Author examines the way press photographers recorded the strike, "stating that the impact of the photographs was in the way they emphasized the importance of on-the-spot news photography. For the first time in California press photography, a 35mm camera was used."
