In anticipation for the main event on May 20, there will be a special Haitian Flag Day lecture on Wednesday, May 13 from 6- 7:30 p.m. at the Cambridge Senior Center, 806 Massachusetts Avenue. The lecture will be given by John Barnes and Josiane Hudicourt-Barnes, who will speak about the rich diversity that the local Haitian population has bestowed upon our city.
43 p., A retrospective exploration of the health perceptions and health experiences of first generation black Caribbean immigrant women during their transition from the Caribbean to the United States. This study utilized a cross-sectional qualitative method. Eight female study participants born in Grenada were recruited from New York, Houston, Washington D.C. and Columbus, Ohio. Interviews were analyzed thematically per standard qualitative analysis techniques.

"I believe that if we can live with the idea of being united for one day then that idea can carry on throughout the rest of our days." Uses data on both region and country of birth for black immigrants in the United States and methodology that allows for the identification of arrival cohorts to test whether there are sending country differences in the health of black adults in the United States. Results show that African immigrants maintain their health advantage over U.S.-born black adults after more than 20 years in the United States. In contrast, black immigrants from the Caribbean who have been in the United States for more than 20 years appear to experience some downward health assimilation.
This article uses a Latina/o critical theory perspective to examine thirty Afro-Caribbean youths' experiences with and perceptions of New York City police. Study findings highlight respondents' views that aggressive policing tactics are intended to restrict and criminalize Latino/a youths' use of public space.

Examines use of clergy for serious personal problems within a representative sample of US black Caribbean adults from the National Survey of American Life. Findings for black Caribbeans indicate similarities, as well as important departures from prior research on the correlates of clergy assistance among African Americans.
