searched through journal, This paper employs diffusion and farm-structure variables to explain variations in Montana farmers' adoption of two kinds of sustainable agricultural practices: those involving intensive management and those which require fewer purchased inputs. While perceived profitability was found to be the most important factor affecting adoption of both, the independent variables had different effects on beliefs about net economic returns as well as on adoption of the two practices. Type of farm enterprise played a larger role in adoption of the low-input practices than the management intensive ones; access to information was more important for the latter. Implications for the policy are discussed.
Agrarian values traditionally have been linked with farm families. Using data from a survey of Wisconsin farm spouses, this article explores the relationship between the identification of farm husbands and farm wives with agrarian values and related sex role orientations and position in the social structure of agriculture. As in previous studies, a commercial/refugist dimension of variation in agrarian identities was found. Depending on the structure of farm household organization, there also was substantial support for a much wider range of agrarian and non-agrarian identities than previously supposed. This was particularly so for farm wives. The change from lifestyles dependent on farming activities to those not dependent on agriculture has been central to the growing diversity in farm spouse roles and self-perceptions. Future studies need to consider three distinctive sets of value-orientations associated with traditional business, and property-holding lifestyles. (author)

search through journal, Critics of agricultural news claim farm media and mass media coverage of agriculture is systematically distorted, a condition that could seriously affect the agricultural information system. A national survey used agricultural journalists as expert judges to assess how well three types of print journalists cover agricultural news. (original)

James F. Evans Collection, Explores the long-term implications of the diffusion of agricultural innovations. Data from a sample of 228 Indian farmers were collected in order to determine the effects of differential acceptance of improved agricultural technology on changes in equality of reward distribution over time. Shows that inequality increases over time with respect to gross agricultural production. But lagging behind in adoption of agricultural technology has to be answered in the negative. Notes that inequalities in both level and standard of living are reduced over time. Early failure to adopt agricultural technology does not seem to lead to disadvantage. Discusses the results in terms of the assumptions made about categories of adopters in diffusion research, and in terms of equity assumptions with regard to technological change. (original)

James F. Evans Collection, Since the late 1950s and 1960s, New Hampshire has experienced unprecedented growth. During the past two decades, this growth has begun to be felt in the state's North Country, particularly among its many small communities. As a result of developmental pressures in this region, numerous local problems related to the environment and socio-economic conditions surfaced. The responsibility for meeting the challenges of such growth and development often fell on amateur bureaucrats. Relatively little is known about how representative such officials are of their local citizenry in terms of attitudes and opinions or socio-demographics. This paper presents the results of a study comparing demographic characteristics and assesses the congruence of attitudes of citizens and local government officials in the North Country of New Hampshire. Findings reveal few differences between rural and urban Ohioans. Greater trust of farmers was found to be related to lower levels of livestock concern. Environmental concern was strongly related to overall concern about large-scale livestock development.
Examines the social dynamics between landlords, tenants and agricultural agency professionals to better understand how those dynamics affect the adoption of sustainable agricultural methods on rented land. Author offers a strategy of change.

Evans, cited reference, This study is concerned with inter-community differences in social organization as these may affect the success of agricultural change programs in a sample of 108 Indian villages. With knowledge of the sociology of the community in its present state, it is not surprising that a number of the operational hypotheses posed were not supported by the data. Among these were hypotheses concerning agrarian structure, occupational structure, and the expected negative role of factional and religious cleavages. Local availability of farm labor and capital, plus a proliferation of formal organizations favor change program success. Traditional and modern elements of community organization seem to be intertwined in the modernization of agriculture, indicating a need for more systematic sociological knowledge of the community. James F. Evans Collection, This is a comparative analysis of the adjustment of a Danish and a Polish ethnic group to the American culture in a dairy farming area in central Wisconsin. The adjustment is evaluated in terms of recommended farm practices. These practices are grouped under three major categories: (1) livestock practices, (2) cropping practices, and (3) mechanization. For every trait measured the Danish farm group exceeds the Polish group in the proportion who have adopted the selected recommended practices. The performance suggests that the Danish and Polish ethnic groups are different universes from the standpoint of behavior and reaction to recommended dairy farming practices. The Danish and the Polish groups constitute distinct culture complexes, or subcultures, within the North central dairy region. the evidence of the study indicated that the cultural adjustments of the Danish group facilitate the introduction of new ides, whereas the adjustments of the Polish group tend to perpetuate status quo. AGRICOLA AGE 85926146, Extract: The study examines evaluations of recent life experience in farming and expectations for life quality in the future as a function of farm structural characteristics and selected individual attributes. Based on a random sample of farm operators, the two sets of variables are used to predict subjective well-being within farm size categories. The results show that individual characteristics tended to be more important determinants of well- being than were farm structure dimensions. farm size and income measures had minor effects on self-ratings of well-being. Under controls, off-farm work status was not related to well-being. The determinants of well-being were particularly difficult to specify among large-farm operators.
