Sergio Bittencourt-Sampaio analyzes the career of two black performers rare success in this area - Joaquina Maria da Conceição Lapa (Lapinha) and Camila Maria da Conceição. These two precursors, distanced by exactly one century were women of remarkable determination and achieved wide recognition through talent, amid a slave and patriarchal society.
